Dear Scouts & Supporters,

As Scouts of Troop 605, we and our communities have received great benefits from the experiences, leadership and opportunities provided by Mr. Minor P. Wilson.  Through his lifelong dedication to Scouting, many young men from all walks of life learned invaluable leadership skills which shaped their lives in many positive ways.  With 2009 being the 62nd anniversary of Edneyville Boy Scout Troop 605, the Minor P. Wilson “BE A LEADER” Foundation was established to keep the lifeworks of Mr. Wilson alive as well as ensuring that Troop 605 continues to provide these opportunities to current and future generations of Scouts.

When World War II began, Mr. Wilson was teaching school and also leading a Scout Troop in Pinehurst N.C.  During World War II, he served as an officer under General Patton’s command of the 3rd Army.  Upon returning to Henderson County, Mr. Wilson at the age of 37 took a job at Edneyville High School.  He organized Troop 5, now known as Troop 605.  From this beginning the Troop grew to become one of the largest in the in the Eastern United States with over 126 Scouts in 1968.

Mr. Wilson taught many young men to hike, swim, cook, and most importantly to be leaders of themselves and within their community.  Don Henderson, the current Scout Master and a Troop 605 Eagle Scout, believes the key to the Troop’s long and unbroken tradition is community support and generational leadership.  Many of the former Scouts, and community leaders, have returned as adults to fill the leadership positions within the Troop.

The purpose of the Minor P. Wilson “BE A LEADER” Foundation is to keep the rich history of the Troop moving forward.  We hope you will participate in any way you can to do your part to “do your duty”
