Hope that you are enjoying what's
left of your summer!
Ski camp starts on Friday, August 13, 2010. Please have your son packed and delivered to the scout hall by 8:00 AM. We will participate in a road-side clean up prior to leaving for the lake. This activity is REQUIRED for ALL scouts attending ski camp. Even if they are coming later or not staying the entire time. If you cannot attend, please contact Don Henderson for an alternative community project. Adults - we need your help to supervise the boys. If you can spare two hours, we would appreciate your support. All participating should wear your Class B (troop t-shirt), shorts or jeans and CLOSED TOED shoes. Remember to bring your class A uniform shirt. Class A shirts MUST be worn during all transport.
Adults planning to attend ski camp - even if it is just for the day, you are required to have Youth Protection training. This is available on-line through the training link at www.danielboonecouncil.org. No exceptions can be made. Once you have taken the course, please print your certificate and give it (or a copy) to Kristi Kicklighter so that your records can be updated.
Sunday, August 18th - After lunch, the troop will participate in the annual tubing trip down the Green River. Parents and siblings are invited to participate. Please make sure you have a pair of old tennis shoes or other shoes with a non-slip sole and closed toes, and old shorts to wear on this trip. Bug spray is also a great thing to have on this trip! We should return about 5:30 PM.
Following the tubing trip, all scouts are invited to view the pictures from Philmont. Philmont families are invited to bring something to grill and meet at the lake. The slide show will start about 6:00 PM. You may want to bring a chair.
ALL advancements for this quarter are DUE no later than noon on 8/16/10 in order to be recognized at the Court of Honor on 8/18/2010. If you want to schedule a Board of Review for rank advancement at the lake, you must bring your Boy Scout Handbook and let Miss Kristi know by tomorrow evening (Ryan and Jonathan, I have your time scheduled for Friday evening). Mr. Henderson can do Scout Master conferences when you arrive at the lake.
Ski camp will conclude with a family dinner. The troop furnishes BBQ chicken, paper products and lemonade. Please plan on bringing a salad, side dish (like baked beans, etc), or a dessert to share. Shawna will be contacting you with more information. You're welcome to come early and swim. Bring a towel and chair (and bug spray...the bugs have been pretty nasty down there this year!). Plan to arrive by 5:30 PM. We ask that everyone stays to help clean up and follows the bus back to scout hall to put away supplies. Typically we're finished by 8:00 PM.
SKI CAMP GENERAL INFO:
There is a PDF booklet available on the troop website, www.bsatroop605.org. It is several years old, but gives you an idea of how we do things at the lake and what you need to pack for your scout. All scouts below the rank of Life are assigned a camping spot outside. Life scouts and above may sleep in the house.
There is limited refrigerator space. First priority is given to meats and other foods that spoil quickly. Your scout should plan to bring a cooler for drinks and snacks. An adult makes an "ice run" at least one time per day. Water is available to drink.
Make sure your scout has an assortment of t-shirts and at least two bathing suits. We've found that "little boys" tend to stay in one swim suit unless they are encouraged to change. As a result, chafing often occurs. You may want to send some Vitamin D cream. Also, please send sunscreen with your son's name clearly marked on it.
Cell phones and other technology - There is limited cell phone reception at the lake. It often depends on where you are standing and how you are holding your head. Please note that an adult will always have a cell phone. If your son needs to reach you, we will ensure that he can reach you. PLEASE NOTE: Troop 605 nor anyone affiliated with the troop in ANY capacity will be responsible for lost, stolen or damaged I-Pods, cell phones, video games, etc. If you bring them, you do so at your own risk.
Behavior - ALL scouts are expected to follow the Scout Oath and Law. Doing so will prevent any behavior issues. That being said, the adults charged with supervising your scout during ski camp are volunteers. They will deal with any "small" issues immediately, and we expect the scouts to follow all reasonable instructions and treat them respectfully. If a scout has a problem with an adult leader (or another scout), he is to take his issue directly to Mr. Henderson. Mr. Henderson has the final word on consequences for behavior issues. If the issue is serious enough or happens repeatedly, Mr. Henderson may call you to come pick your scout up. A rule of thumb: A scout is reverent and God is always watching - if you wouldn't do something in front of your preacher or your little ol' granny, it is probably a good idea to skip it at ski camp!
First regular meeting of the year will be Monday, August 30th at 7:00 PM.
Enjoy the rest of your summer - have a great time at ski camp! If you have any questions, email Miss Kristi at kkicklighter@att.net or call me at 828-489-1717. Mr. Henderson will be back on Thursday afternoon and will be glad to help you with any questions as well.
